Things To Do in Latvia

Latvia isn’t just Riga’s Old Town, although that’s always a lovely place to start with its cobbled streets and lively cafés. Spend a morning wandering the Central Market’s massive pavilions where you can snag fresh rye bread or smoked fish. And if you’re around in late spring, don’t miss the lilac bloom in Vērmanes Garden, a quiet spot locals cherish.

Outside the city, there’s so much to get stuck into. Try kayaking on the Gauja River near Sigulda , the views of castle ruins and dense woods will make you want to stay out all day. Or head to the seaside in Jūrmala for a chill day on the wide sandy beach (and yes, the water’s cold, but refreshingly so). Winters? Don’t skip a visit to Cēsis, where old town charm meets cozy taverns and even ice skating on a frozen pond.

If you want to explore culture beyond just the museums, keep an ear out for local folk music gigs or a midsummer festival, they’re a whole different kind of celebration. Oh, and one last thing: if you find yourself at a roadside stand selling blackcurrant jams or homemade honey, grab some. It’s how I keep a little piece of Latvia back home.
