Wine & Beer Experiences in Latvia

Latvia’s beer and wine scene has quietly been growing, and if you think Riga is just about vodka, think again. There are cozy craft breweries tucked away in places like Āgenskalns and the up-and-coming neighborhoods near Maskavas Forštate, where you can try beers brewed with local twists, like the infamous Riga Black Balsam-infused ales. And if you’re curious about Latvian wine, don’t be surprised. The country’s cooler climate means wines here are more of a niche art, with vineyards in places like Sabile and the Kurzeme region turning out surprisingly fresh white and fruit wines.

A local tip? Visit Užavas Alus brewery near the coast if you get a chance,it’s a bit off the beaten path but their Baltic Porter is worth the trip. If wine is your thing, plan a visit to Sabile Wine Hill in late summer, when the harvest vibe is real and you can taste wines right where the grapes grow. Plus, many places offer pairing sessions with rye bread or smoked fish, which feels very Latvian and makes all the difference.

So, if you want an experience that’s less about flashy bars and more about grabbing a pint with locals or savoring something genuinely Latvian, this is where you want to start.
