Description

The focus of the city tour is of course on Latvian history. But it is inextricably linked to the city's German-Baltic, Russian and Jewish heritage of Riga. To start the city tour, we talk about Heinz Erhardt, who was born in Riga and whose grandfather had his famous music shop in the immediate vicinity of the Freedom Monument. A short walk through the picturesque and shady Basteiberg along the city canal takes us to the dramatic events at the Freedom Monument in Latvia's most recent history - during the Singing Revolution in the early 90s of the 20th century. At the Latvian Parliament building and on the Dom cathedral square you will learn more details about the Singing Revolution in Latvia, which brought the Soviet rulers and tanks out of the country. On the way to the town hall square we walk along a street that was used as a famous film set in the Soviet era. The Town Hall Square with the newly built House of Blackheads for Riga's 800th anniversary in 2001 is a must during the city walk. There is also a beautiful view of the new National Library from the town hall square.
