Description

Start the tour in Jurmala by getting kitted out with a bike and helmet and listening to some brief instructions. Set off to explore the special cycling routes of Jurmala which are designed to make biking easy and safe.  Make your first stop at the Turtle Monument located on Riga Beach near the historical Baltic Beach Hotel. Admire the architecture of this historic bathing house which was built in 1907.  Then, bike along the sea coast or street on the other side of the dunes. Marvel at the wooden villas which were built in the first half of the 20th-century. Observe the soviet-style architecture of these now private beach houses which reflects the popularity and wealth of this resort town.  Next, stop at the historical Dzintari Concert Hall which was built in 1936. Learn about the world-famous opera singers who have performed here and the building's glorious acoustics that were well known across Europe and USSR throughout the 20th-century.  Arrive at the nearby park and climb up the tower where you will have the chance to take pictures of Jurmala from an aerial perspective. Continue along the route into the quiet Jurmala streets lined with more historic and contemporary villas.  Make a short pitstop at the Lielupe Fishing Museum. Visit the exhibition and learn about the fishing industry in the 19th-century. See the black sauna 'pirts' (a type of local bath), ice cellar, fish smoking house, and the historic thalassotherapy center which used seawater as a form of therapy. On the way back, peddle along the dunes, until you arrive at the start point.
