Description
This 90-minute walking tour reveals Riga’s history, dating back to 1201 when a German bishop founded the city on the banks of the Daugava River. Your guide will explain how Hanseatic merchants and successive empires shaped Riga into a key Northern European city.
The tour covers important landmarks including the Dome Cathedral—the largest medieval church in the Baltic states—Gothic Guild Houses, the House of the Blackheads, Riga Castle (current residence of Latvia’s president), and the Swedish Gate, the only remaining 17th-century city gate. You will also see St. Peter’s Church, the Powder Tower, and the cat statues, each tied to the city’s political history.
Stories from your local guide reveal not only the appearance of these sites but also their origins, residents, and historical events that shaped them. Groups are limited to 20 participants. For tours with 10 or more guests, audio systems ensure everyone hears the guide clearly without crowding.
