Description
This tour explores the western part of Latvia around Tukums, a town 70 kilometers from Riga with rich historical attractions. Tukums was officially declared a town in 1795, but has a history dating back further. Walking along the historical streets of the old town offers a 19th-century atmosphere, with plaques detailing former residents and a modern sculpture of Katrina of Tukums.
The first stop is the Schlokenbeka fortified manor, now home to the Road Construction Museum. Next, visit the Durbe Palace, a neoclassical former landlord's residence. The tour continues to Jaunmokas Hunting Palace, built in the early 20th century for Riga's mayor at that time, followed by Jaunpils Castle, constructed in 1301 and one of the few medieval castles in Latvia with its original form preserved.
Jaunpils Castle, built by master Gottfried von Horn of the Livonian Order, has many legends linked to Matthias von der Recke, a fearless 16th-century owner. Nearby is a church from the late 16th century and a 200-year-old water mill, evoking the romantic era. On the return trip, there is a visit to the local winery 'Abavas Vini' to view and taste their products.
