Explore Latvia’s culture and history from the 1200s to the present, including rulers of Riga between 1201 and 1914, the city’s medieval economy, Latvian faith and language, folk songs, the 19th-century intellectual awakening, the 1905 revolution, World War I, Latvia’s struggle for independence, and life during the Soviet era.
Walk through Riga’s Old Town, visiting landmarks such as the Powder Tower, Swedish Gates, Three Brothers houses, St. Jacob’s Cathedral, Riga Castle, the Anglican Church, Stock Exchange, Dom Cathedral (from outside), Black Cat House, Guildhouses, Town Hall Square, Blackheads House, and St. Peter’s Church. Learn why Riga earned the nickname “town of Sherlock Holmes” and the historical tale of the Latvian Cinderella from the 18th century.
