The Daugavpils Fortress, also known as Dinaburg Fortress, is the only early 19th-century military fortification in Northern Europe that remains largely intact. Construction began during the early 1800s in anticipation of Napoleon’s invasion. Although unfinished, the fortress withstood the first attacks from Napoleon’s army in 1812 and covers over 150 hectares, showcasing advanced military engineering of that era.

Construction was fully completed in 1878, making it the last bastion-style fortress built in Europe but also marking the end of its military relevance. From 1947 to 1993, the fortress served under the USSR Ministry of Defence, housing the Military School of Aviation Engineers, playing a key role in Soviet military infrastructure.

Today, the fortress hosts the Mark Rothko Art Center. Rothko, born in Daugavpils, is a leading Abstract Expressionist artist whose work reflects his connection to the city. The center is the only location in Eastern Europe displaying original artworks by Rothko, including his notable piece 'No. 6 (Violet, Green, and Red),' one of the most expensive paintings ever sold.

The tour provides an immersive experience into military history and Russian Empire heritage, enriched by significant art exhibitions. The fortress also commemorates notable historical figures associated with its past.
